Industry Summit - a conversation between the Department and industry

The annual Industry Summit is an opportunity for industry and the Department to have a conversation about strategic travel, trade and migration issues.

Industry representatives will hear from the Department’s leaders, including the Secretary of the Department and Commissioner of the Australian Border Force, about our strategic direction and priorities for the future. By participating in the Industry Summit workshops, industry representatives can influence the Department’s plans to continue improving our processes, policies and programmes.

This event is an essential component of our partnership with industry.

Industry Summit 2017

The Department’s future initiatives will be discussed when senior industry and departmental representatives meet during the fourth annual Industry Summit to be held in Melbourne on 31 July 2017.

The theme for this year’s Summit is Border innovation: strengthening our nation’s economy, security and society.

The Industry Summit will focus on ways we can create opportunities for collaboration, co-design and co-investment in technologies and business processes that will help the Department respond to the changing global trade, traveller and migration environments.

Those unable to attend the Industry Summit can follow online via Twitter (@AusBorderForce), as keynote speeches will be live streamed.

You can also join the conversation using our hashtag #DIBPIndustrySummit.

The event is by invitation only. For more information email industrysummit@border.gov.au.

Industry Summit 2016

The 2016 event brought together over 300 leaders from trade, traveller and migration sectors, peak bodies and Government to discuss how we can improve our partnerships at the border.

The Department's new Industry Hub webpage was also launched at the Industry Summit. The Industry Hub improves communication with industry stakeholders and makes news more readily available.

Outcomes

Through interactive discussion, Industry Summit delegates identified new ways of engaging to focus on attracting and retaining migrants who are committed to supporting Australia’s long-term prosperity.

Industry delegates identified ways for the Department to work with industry such as mitigating risks at the border while streamlining clearance of cargo reducing red tape and recognising the benefits of facilitated trade as a whole-of-Government approach.

In the travel space, delegates and the Department recognised the opportunities that new technologies will bring to the border of the future. For more information see:

Industry Summit 2015

The 2015 Industry Summit built on the foundation established at the inaugural 2014 Industry Summit, hosted by the former Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS). The integration of ACBPS and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to form the new Department represented a profound change to how the Australian Government protects Australia's border and presented new opportunities for collaboration with industry.

Outcomes

Two Industry Engagement Strategies 2020—Trade, Customs and Traveller, and Migration and Mobility were launched. These complementary strategies were developed in consultation with industry and provided a framework for engagement and consultation with the Department on a broad range of policy, operational and regulatory issues.

Following the Industry Summit and the feedback provided, the Department committed to actions across: improved provision of information, consultation and opportunities for collaboration. For more information see:
