Vietnam, Hanoi Office - Visa information and lodgement

The Hanoi office provides immigration and visa services to clients in Vietnam.

The Australian Embassy in Vietnam website will explain how to lodge your application and what documents to provide. 

Visa application requirements differ from country to country. Use the relevant document checklist to make sure your application is complete.

Lodging a visa application

If you are from Vietnam and Laos you can submit online the following applications:

  • Visitor visas 
  • Student visas* 
  •  Partner visas 
  • Resident Return visas 
  •  Australian Citizenship by Descent.

*Note: Student visa (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) applications can only be lodged online.

At an Australian Visa Application Centre
The department has an agreement with VFS Global in Vietnam to provide Australian visa lodgement and biometric collection services through Australian Visa Application Centres located in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and Danang.

You can lodge your application in person at one of the Australian Visa Application Centres in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Danang. The Australian Visa Application Centres charge a service fee in addition to any visa application charge.

By post to the Australian Embassy, Hanoi

You can lodge your application by post directly to the Australian Embassy in Hanoi. Please ensure you have enclosed the appropriate visa application charge (or evidence that the fee has been paid).

At the Australian Embassy, Hanoi in person
You can lodge your application in person at the Australian Embassy in Hanoi by appointment only. Appointments can be made by  email.

Note: Due to the high demand for appointments it could be a few weeks before an appointment can be scheduled. Alternatively, you can lodge your application at an Australian Visa Application Centre.

Permanent entry visas

Partner, prospective marriage and child visa applications from applicants usually living in one of the countries in country coverage list above are processed at the Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Applications for general skilled, business innovation and investment, Distinguished Talent (subclass 124), Former Resident (subclass 151) and parent subclasses are lodged and processed in Australia.

Refugee and Humanitarian visas

Clients from the East Asia region whose application for a Refugee and Humanitarian (Class XB) visa is accompanied by a proposal form (form 681) must lodge their application at the department's NSW Offshore Humanitarian Processing Centre.

This applies to people who are lodging a visa for consideration under the Global Special Humanitarian Program (SHP) or as an immediate family member.

All other Refugee and Humanitarian applications should be directed to the closest immigration office outside Australia.

Temporary entry visas

Unless indicated below, Visitor, Student, Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist), Medical Treatment, Resident Return and Transit Visa applications from clients in the above country coverage list are processed in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Visit the Australian Embassy in Vietnam website for further details on visa processing locations.

The information below gives the lodgement arrangements for temporary entry visas. For more detailed information refer to the relevant subclass visa pages on how to apply.

Student visa (subclass 500) and Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) applications must be lodged online.

Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400) - Visa applicants will need to lodge an online application

Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) - Sponsorship (if required) and visa applicants can lodge an online application.

Training visa (subclass 407) - Sponsorship, nomination and visa applications will need to lodge an online application.

Temporary Work Activity visa (subclass 408) - Sponsorship and visa applications will need to lodge an online application.

Paper applications for the Sponsored Family stream of the Visitor (subclass 600) visa must be lodged in Australia. These applications will be processed at one of the Sponsored Family Visitor processing centres below.

Temporary Work (Skilled) (subclass 457)​ sponsorship, nomination and visa applications must be lodged online. These applications will be processed at one of the Centres of Excellence in Australia.

If you are sponsored by an Australian employer, you must lodge your visa application at the same office in Australia where your employer lodged papers to support your application. Please ask your employer where they lodged these papers.​​​​​

Citizenship

Applications for Citizenship by Descent can be lodged in person, by post or at one of the Australian Visa Application Centres in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Danang and are processed at the Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Applications for Australian citizenship general eligibility and other situations, and applications to resume or renounce (give up) Australian citizenship should be lodged at the Canberra office in Australian Capital Territory.
