Invited participant in an event

You can apply under the Invited Participant activity type of this visa if you intend to stay for three months or less and have been invited by an Australia organisation to participate in social and cultural activities associated with community-based events, for example:

  • sports competitors (and their support staff including managers, medical staff, coaches, referees, officials) participating in events, touring as part of an overseas sports team or undertaking a training programme (sportspersons under contract to play for an Australian sporting team are excluded from applying as Invited Participants – see below)
  • ministers conducting religious services or engaging in other religious activities as a guest of an Australian religious institution
  • religious workers at a religious event
  • academics engaging in lectures, workshops or research activities invited by a tertiary academic institution
  • public speakers or lecturers
  • speakers, presenters and exhibitors at trade fairs, expos, exhibitions, conferences, workshops or seminars
  • entertainers attending specific promotional events (but not performing)
  • artists engaging in the creation of visual art, or holding exhibitions of their work
  • authors at a writers festival presenting work in front of an audience
  • dance choreographers conducting dance workshops which includes a closing performance (non-ticketed)
  • persons participating as competitors in non-sporting competitions, such as dance competitions, music competitions, online gaming competitions, student competitions (see also Visitor visas)

You should consider applying under another activity type of the Temporary Activity visa or for a different visa if you are, for example, one of the following:

  • participants or attendees, who are not working, entertaining or being paid to contribute at trade fairs, expos, exhibitions, religious or cultural events, conferences, workshops or seminars – see Visitor visas
  • amateur sportspersons seeking to undertake sports training and/or play in some amateur matches; and persons who support amateur players or teams on a genuine unpaid volunteer basis – see Visitor visas
  • sports persons under contract to play for or coach an Australian sporting team - see Sport
  • sports trainees participating in high level structured sports training programmes for more than three months - see Sport
  • undertaking full-time religious work – see Religious worker
  • academics engaging in research activities invited by a tertiary academic institution for more than 3 months – see Researcher
  • entertainers and performers working in the Australian Entertainment industry – see Entertainers
  • production crew for competitions that will be filmed and broadcast in Australia – see Entertainers
  • journalists and other media personnel covering events – where the production is intended for Australian audiences – see Entertainers

  • persons who are otherwise working at the event (such as event project managers and specialised construction workers) – see Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (Subclass 400)
