Role of our service providers

​Serco

The Department contracts the management of Australian immigration detention facilities to Serco.

Serco provides a range of services including security and detainee welfare and engagement.

Services are delivered under the provisions of the contract, relevant law, departmental values, policy and procedures. In their day-to-day duties, Serco must:

  • support and promote a stable and harmonious environment, and seek to resolve situations and tensions peacefully
  • treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and without harassment
  • behave in a tolerant, respectful and culturally sensitive manner towards detainees and their visitors.

The Department actively monitors the performance of Serco to ensure contractual obligations and service delivery standards are met.

International Health and Medical Services

​The Department contracts the delivery of health services for detainees in Australian immigration detention facilities and in community placement to International Health and Medical Services. Under the contract, IHMS provides health care services for detainees that are broadly comparable to those available to the Australian community.

IHMS delivers a range of health services across all Australian immigration detention facilities including:

  • timely access to primary health care through nurse led triaging
  • access to mental health care
  • referrals to specialist health care
  • antenatal care.

The Department actively monitors the performance of IHMS to ensure contractual obligations and service delivery standards are met.
