What if I was born overseas and have acquired citizenship by application?

When you apply for an Australian passport, you will need to provide to the Australian Passport Office (APO) one of the following documents to prove your Australian citizenship:

  • an Australian citizenship certificate
  • a Citizenship by Descent extract
  • an Adoption in accordance with the Hague Convention on Inter-country Adoption or bilateral arrangement extract
  • an extract from the register of Australian births abroad.

If your Australian citizenship document does not show your gender or place and country of birth, you must also present your foreign birth certificate (with an official English translation where necessary). If this is not possible, you must present your foreign passport (and a photocopy of the page confirming your personal details).

If you do not have one of the above citizenship documents you will need to apply for a replacement certificate by lodging Form 119 Application for evidence of Australian citizenship (445KB PDF).
