Carer visas

You may be eligible to apply for a carer visa if you:

  • Need to come to Australia to:
    • Care for a relative with a long-term or permanent medical condition, or
    • Provide permanent or long-term practical support to help a relative care for a member of their family in their household who has a long-term or permanent medical condition
  • Understand what kind of care or support your relative needs
  • Are willing and able to assist them

Person in need of care

The person in need of care must:

  • Have their medical condition assessed by a specified health provider to make sure they:
    • cannot take care of themselves or manage normal daily life
    • need direct care due to the medical condition
  • Have no relatives in Australia who can provide the required care
  • Be unable to get the care they need from health services in Australia

Sponsors

You must have a sponsor to be granted a carer visa to help a relative in Australia. The sponsor must also be the person or the spouse of the person requiring the care or assistance.

A sponsor must be:

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Your relative (or their partner)

And one of the following:

Who is a relative?

A ‘relative’ is the partner, child, parent, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew (or step-equivalent) of the person applying for the visa.

Which visa option is right for me?

There are different visa options available for people who are in or outside Australia when applying for a carer visa.

Applying outside Australia

Scenario 1

  • You are outside Australia and want to move to Australia to help a relative due to a long-term or permanent medical condition

Visa option: Carer Visa (subclass 116)

To apply for a Carer Visa (subclass 116), a person must:

  • Meet health and character requirements (including family members)
  • Have a sponsor

Applying inside Australia

Scenario 2

You are in Australia and want to stay in Australia to help a relative due to a long-term or permanent medical condition:

Visa option: Carer Visa (subclass 836)

To apply for a Carer Visa (subclass 836), a person must:

  • Meet health and character requirements (including family members)
  • Have a sponsor

Capping and queuing

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection may limit how many people can get a certain type of visa each year. The limiting of visa places is called capping.
If you are applying for a visa that has reached the capping limit, you must wait in a queue until more visa places become available.
