Information for organisations - Electronic visa record

Australian visa holders can provide evidence that they have the authority to travel to, enter and/or remain in Australia by showing their passport or ImmiCard linked to their electronic visa record.

Our online systems are used to verify a visa holder's visa details and conditions. Online checking is efficient, reliable and provides real-time information about the person's visa. This reflects a government-wide digital agenda to make services more accessible and convenient by providing clients with secure online alternatives.

Electronic visa record

Australian visas are issued, recorded and stored electronically in a central database. The visa is linked to a visa holder's passport or ImmiCard enabling online checking of visa details by visa holders and registered Australian organisations. Online checking provides accurate, secure and real-time information about a visa holder's visa details.

Undertaking third party visa checks

Visa Entitlement verification Online (VEVO)

VEVO is a free web-service which gives visa holders and registered Australian organisations access to visa information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Australian registered organisations must first secure the visa holder’s permission before they conduct any VEVO checks.

Document Verification Service (DVS)

The process used to establish a person's identity relies in part on the integrity of documents presented by an individual. DVS is a national online system that allows government and private sector organisations to check the accuracy and validity of information on key Australian government issued documents commonly presented as evidence of a person's identity.

Identity documents that can be checked include birth, marriage and change-of-name certificates, driver licences, Medicare cards, citizenship certificates, ImmiCards, passports and visas.

The DVS may be used to verify claimed Australian citizenship or Australian visa status by checking a person's citizenship or foreign passport details against departmental citizenship or visa records.

More information about DVS is available via the Attorney-General's Department website.

Data sharing arrangements

We provide visa information to other Australian government agencies to support their eligibility and enrolment processes. For example, the Department of Human Services can access visa information as part of the Medicare enrolment process and the Australian Taxation Office's system checks a visa holder's details when they apply online for a tax file number.
