Careers for people with disabilities

We are committed to attracting, recruiting and retaining people with disability.

Australian Public Service (APS) workforce statistics show a drop in the percentage representation of people with disability across the APS over the last year from 3.0 per cent to 2.9 per cent of the workplace. People in the department who identify themselves as having a disability represent 2.5 per cent of the workforce.

Disability Action Plan

Our Disability Action Plan 2016-20 (584KB PDF) shows our commitment to better support our employees and clients with disability, and those who care for a person with disability. It will help build relationships, create new opportunities, and provide accessible workplaces that allow everyone to fully participate.

Reasonable adjustments

We have a reasonable adjustment policy that covers all aspects of employment. Reasonable adjustment refers to workplace adjustments made to allow an employee with disability to:

  • participate to their maximum potential in recruitment processes, and promotion and training opportunities
  • perform their duties safely in the workplace
  • have equal terms and conditions of employment.

We provide reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities who are employees or applicants for employment.

If you need assistance or adjustments to fully participate in the application or the interview process, email the Recruitment Section at recruitment@border.gov.au or phone us on 1300 793 883. Details will be provided as part of your interview booking process.

Employment opportunities will not be denied to anyone because of the need to make reasonable adjustment for a person's disability. We support equity in employment, have a workforce from culturally diverse backgrounds, and we select employees on the basis of merit, measured against specified job criteria.

Disability support network

We have a disability support network which provides a consultation and advocacy role for people with disability, and support for employees with disability. The network raises disability awareness and is consulted on the development of disability policy, strategies and initiatives. Network members are encouraged to play an active role in implementing initiatives of our Disability Action Plan.
